Our Story
In 2009, Friends of Dzikwa Society was established in Zimbabwe to strengthen local fundraising. It secured a Private Voluntary organization / PVO status in 2014, with Reg. No: PVO10/2014. In 2020, Dzikwa Trust launched a new initiative called Edu4Talent program. The aim is to engage the corporate sector in supporting promising vulnerable youth though tailor-made sponsorship arrangements. The program allows companies to combine social responsibility actions with their business objectives. The youth gains relevant education and skills for better employment outcomes. The story of Dzikwa Trust began in January 1993 as a private initiative when Seppo Ainamo moved from Finland to Zimbabwe and started paying school fees for one 8-year-old boy. This boy lived and went to school in Dzivarasekwa 20 km West of the capital city Harare. Soon all the township schools started proposing new cases for Seppo. By 1996, Seppo supported 18 underprivileged children in Dzivarasekwa. Oili Wuolle, a central banker from Finland, found herself in Zimbabwe working for a capacity-building institute (MEFMI) in 1996. Seppo and Oili became a team, sharing the same desire to help vulnerable children in Zimbabwe and to work as volunteers for their benefit.
With encouraging support from friends and relatives, Seppo and Oili increased the number of children year after year. In September 2002, Dzikwa Trust was duly registered as a charitable educational trust in Zimbabwe. The Chairperson 2002-2019 was the late Stephen J. Chifunyise. Ever since, Dzikwa Trust has been the implementing partner for all support activities. Children of Zimbabwe Society (originally Zimbabwe AIDS Orphans Society) was established in Finland 2003 to increase visibility, credibility, and to secure funding. The Finnish Society has been the main fundraising arm for Dzikwa Trust Education & Wellbeing Support program until today.
In 2008, the support reached the current level of 400 vulnerable children annually. The share of the girl child is 2/3. Dzikwa Trust has built a multi-functional Activity Center for the children and program administration. Dzikwa Trust program covers: Basic education; Advanced & Higher education; Wellbeing & Child development; Skills for employability & entrepreneurship, and Reforestation and Food Security.
Dzikwa Trust is a well-recognized and highly reputable OVC-support organization, working together with schools, relevant authorities, embassies in Harare and with local and international NGOs working for children’s rights.
Dzikwa Trust has been implementing environmental activities as a special project since 2008. Today, the Reforestation & Food Security program has a significant contribution to children’s nutrition support and to conservation efforts in the township.
